Father is so unfair.
The case of the older son remains true even today. The righteous man leaves everything he has and lives his life like a hermit to satisfy God. Others fast for days, walk miles to a temple, or beat their body in sacrifice and to earn God’s favor. The righteous keep the laws that they have construed for themselves so that they can earn their certificate of righteousness.

When I look to Jesus, I find God in human flesh, showing us a few amazing examples of what we should be doing on behalf of humankind. The law in Biblical times suggested that adultery was punishable by death. Even so, Jesus advocated something higher than the law, forgiving the adulterous woman and defending her against the community who stood to kill her. Jesus sat with the outcasts and dined with the sinners. He touched the untouchables and healed the lepers. The law of the Sabbath did not stop Jesus from doing good to those who needed it, healing the sick and feeding the poor.

The silver lining in all of this is the fact that God is the one who is constantly searching and looking out for us. Jesus shares two parables about the Lost Sheep and Lost Coin (Luke 15:1 to 10) that share this message. When both were lost, the owner of each searched high and low, day and night, until they were found. When they were found, their owners celebrated with great joy. In the same way, God seeks diligently after us so that we may be joyfully united with him.
