Exodus 14:2-4,10-12,25,30-31 Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.’ And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.” So the Israelites did this... As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the LORD. They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”... He made the wheels of their chariots come off so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites! The LORD is fighting for them against Egypt”... That day the LORD saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. And when the Israelites saw the great power the LORD displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the LORD and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.
Clearly the Egyptians responded to this whole episode just as we would today. We try to control everything with our human intellect and judgment and are often humbled by factors outside our control which mystify us.
As I type this, there are scores of people suffering in different parts of the world including New Zealand which was rocked by powerful earthquakes a few days ago and all of man's wisdom and power could not stop or control the earthquake.
What is God speaking to us today and is there any hope for humanity or are we simply doomed to a humiliating death?
Mastery over the elements is what man has sought from the beginning of time and continues even today. Control is core to our belief that we can manage and sustain all things ourselves but can we really?
We can look at this episode in human history as a great freedom attained or a great loss suffered, depending on our bent of mind. There were people affected on both sides and this incident affected life as we know it.
In all this carnage and jubilation at the same time, what we know is that God was in clear control of both sides. God orchestrated all of it for His own glory and what He expects of us is to respond to Him in return.
Our response could be of anger and grief over the carnage or of great joy over the freedom or worse still we could ignore this as just another myth and get on with life.
Unfortunately life does not seem to come with any guarantees. My wife's cousins live in Christchurch, NZ, and they live near the epicenter of the quake. One of them knows and walks with the Lord and I am not certain of the other. They are suffering with the many who live there and we can only pray for God's intervention and protection.
The earthquake in Haiti, the tsunamis in South East Asia, the floods in Australia, the revolutions in the Middle East and Africa, the volcano eruptions in Iceland, etc. are clearly evidence that we are simply occupants of this planet that is responding to a force outside of our control.
Clearly the God of the Bible has power over all the elements and over life itself. We can choose to ignore Him but it does not look like His patience lasts too long and we are called to make a choice, life or death.
God offers each of us life free of the bondage of sin and this deceit called control. He offers us hope beyond the physical life we see and assures us of an eternity in His presence.
His offer is made to us through His son Jesus Christ who came to live among us, was crucified for no fault of His as our sin offering, was raised up from the dead as proof of God's assurance of our eternal life, was confirmed to us through the word called the Bible and revealed to us through His Holy Spirit.
Are you willing to be counted among the great Egyptians who were washed away by God's fury or are you wanting to be a part of God's redeemed people who are protected, provided for, directed and discipled by God Himself?
In His Loving Service,
Psalm 106:7-8 When our fathers were in Egypt, they gave no thought to your miracles; they did not remember your many kindnesses, and they rebelled by the sea, the Red Sea. Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, to make his mighty power known.
