The Great White Throne Judgment

Revelation 20:11-15 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Chapter 20 brings in the actual judgments and shows what is finally to take place. Satan's thousand year imprisonment is introduced, the ones who died for the gospel and the many who survived tribulation without being marked on their forehead or hands live together in Jesus' presence for the period and then Satan is released only to try and cause the people of God harm but God rains fire on him and his adversaries and puts them into the lake of fire. This is hopeful and wonderful news!

After that, the white throne judgment takes place and while the thought of white seems to indicate a good judgment, it is not all wonderful. It is in fact something I pray no one I know would ever go through for the ruling is horrendous!

What is God's yardstick for people who are to be judged in the white throned judgment, who are these people and is there hope for us from this gruesome end?

God is fair and in all fairness will judge the living and the dead. The white throne judgment is for those of us who did not accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. It is a judgment of those who wanted to be judged by the merit of their lives and live by their own ideals or Gods.

The yardstick was simply if the net worth of their good deeds was more than the wrong they did. It is a terrible yardstick to go by because the Bible reminds us that all our good works are like dirty rags before God because Christ is not the reason for our works.

That means any and all good works would not stand! Worse still, in God's sight, sin is the same as whether we lie, think an ill thought, shortchange someone or murder. All our actions that fall short of the glory of God are considered sin and so this is a very one-sided judgment because anyone called into it is condemned!

The books referred to here are actual records of our entire life and these will record everything about our lives. The other book, the book of life, is the record of all those who are saved by the grace of God alone and they will not be called to this judgment.

This is unfair you must think and I agree but to God who is merciful, kind, loving and gracious, He has given us umpteen reasons to call on Him and has even paid for our sins through the sacrifice of His son Jesus. Until we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we cannot be washed by His sacrifice and made clean.

You and I now have a choice to make. Do we want to be condemned by the creator of this universe and die an unending death in the lake of fire along with Satan and his adversaries or do we want to be featured in the book of life and spared not by our own works but by the blood of Jesus paid for our sins?
