Possessions Or Promise?

Genesis 36:1-8 Now these are the records of the generations of Esau (that is, Edom). Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah and the granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite; also Basemath, Ishmael’s daughter, the sister of Nebaioth. Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, and Basemath bore Reuel, and Oholibamah bore Jeush and Jalam and Korah. These are the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan. Then Esau took his wives and his sons and his daughters and all his household, and his livestock and all his cattle and all his goods which he had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to another land away from his brother Jacob. For their property had become too great for them to live together, and the land where they sojourned could not sustain them because of their livestock. So Esau lived in the hill country of Seir; Esau is Edom.

When I read this chapter, I was left with amazement of how God truly blessed Esau even though he was not the one to receive Isaac's blessing.

Clearly Esau was blessed with a lineage of great kings who ruled the lands around Israel and great wealth that was for all to see. What then is the point of Isaac's blessing and where is Israel in all of this?

Isaac's blessing of Esau reads, (Gen.27:39-40) “Behold, away from the fertility of the earth shall be your dwelling, And away from the dew of heaven from above. “By your sword you shall live, And your brother you shall serve; But it shall come about when you become restless, That you will break his yoke from your neck.”

We see clearly that Esau would live away from the grace of God and in rebellion to God and His people. Esau's life would be dedicated to living by the sword and living in the land of his possession.

With the children of God on the other hand, we often see that they are generally left behind in terms of outward prosperity and honor. It seems like this was a trial of God for on one hand we hear of the pomp and glory of the kings of Edom and on the other, the bond-slavery of the Israelites to the Egyptians.

However, those that look for great things from God need to learn to wait on Him for His deliverance rather than taking things in their own hands.

God works in powerful ways but at His time and in His pace and we as His children consider it pure joy to have our sins forgiven and our ways directed by the King of Kings!

The children of the world have all their hope in hand and nothing in hope whereas the children of God have all theirs in hope and nothing in hand.

Mount Seir is called the land of possession whereas Canaan is called the land of promise. The question for us today is what we long for? Instant results and eternal suffering or God's provision and eternal hope?

In His Loving Service,

Luke 16:25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.
