Revelation 1:17-20 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
“Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later. The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
Today I begin a journey I have dreaded for a long while, a journey across the book of Revelation, a prophetic book written by John when he was imprisoned on the island of Patmos. My dread was that I would not present it the way God would be glorified but knowing that this is a journey that God has set me out to complete, I trust God to provide me the wisdom to understand and pen what His heart is on these visions.
Often I have seen painted pictures of Jesus and if I were to see another picture, it would not be hard to recognize Him or so I thought until I read John's description of Jesus (v 12-16). The Jesus in John's vision is not the Jesus I know from sight and as I read through the 1st chapter, I began to wonder why Jesus would reveal himself in such a complex way through images that are hard for us to imagine and numbers that mean a lot more than just being literal numbers?
John must've felt the same way when he was shown these mysterious visions and asked to record them. He must have know how incredibly bizarre all of this would be for anyone to accept after the simplicity of Jesus' life here on earth just 60 years before the vision.
When Jesus placed His hand on John, His words were words John was very familiar with. When Jesus was on earth, He did say that He is the Great I AM, He did die a physical death that the world witnessed in Israel and was lifted up from the dead to sit on the right hand side of God The Father, He did tell His disciples that anyone who wanted to access the Father would have to do so only through His Son, Jesus Christ.
The reason for this mysterious revelation is that we are people with limited vision and understanding and like the glory of God which Moses had to be sheltered from because of the holiness of God, we cannot fully comprehend God or His ways which are much higher than ours. Our human minds cannot understand more than God has revealed to us but one day soon, we will join the hosts of heaven and praise God's name or for those who never put their trust in Jesus, be a part of the many who are condemned by Him.
My prayer for you today is that you will open your heart and mind to Jesus and let Him take the reins of your life and direct you to His glory. I pray that we would not try to simply comprehend God and fit Him in our limited minds but instead explore Him to be filled by His love and grace that are sufficient for us.
In His Loving Service,
Isaiah 44:6 This is what the LORD says—Israel's King and Redeemer, the LORD of Heaven's Armies: "I am the First and the Last; there is no other God.
