Lighting The World's Ways

Numbers 8:1-2,5-6,14,16,22 The Lord said to Moses, “Give Aaron the following instructions: When you set up the seven lamps in the lampstand, place them so their light shines forward in front of the lampstand”... Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now set the Levites apart from the rest of the people of Israel and make them ceremonially clean... In this way, you will set the Levites apart from the rest of the people of Israel, and the Levites will belong to me... “Of all the people of Israel, the Levites are reserved for me. I have claimed them for myself in place of all the firstborn sons of the Israelites; I have taken the Levites as their substitutes... After that the Levites went into the Tabernacle to perform their duties, assisting Aaron and his sons. So they carried out all the commands that the Lord gave Moses concerning the Levites.

It seems God was partial towards the Levites in that He chose them from among the many and gave them the princely task of interceding between Israel and God.

What is God speaking to us through this passage and is God's service only for a few from the many?

The chapter starts off with God's instruction regarding the lighting of the lamp-stands, that God had previously ordained to be made for the Tabernacle (Exodus 25:31).

As the Israelites representative to God, Aaron was called to the role of a servant in God's house and in his duty was to always light his Master's candle to reveal God's instructions and blessings upon the Israelites. Read Exodus 25:31; Psalm 18:28; Proverbs 6:23; 2 Peter 1:19 & Matthew 5:15.

The calling of the Levites to serve God was certainly an election only God could make but so was the calling of the 12 tribes to their roles in this mass exodus of a people group.

God has shown from Genesis 1 until now that He has specific roles and purpose for each of His creation who humble themselves before Him.

We in our humanness might consider one role or task mightier than the next but in God's sight nothing is menial because He sent His own son, Jesus Christ, to undergo the most shameful and excruciating death at the hands of His own creation for their own redemption!

Often I am reminded of one of the greatest problems we face in our walk with God which is pride. It is what seems to consume us and pursuing it is what eventually destroys us because in seeking to serve ourselves, we lose sight of the one we are called to serve, Jesus Christ.

Through Jesus' arrival on the earth over 2,000 years ago, we received our high priest who intercedes on our behalf with God.

He is the light in this dark and sinful world and His word is a light to our path.

We as children of God are called to seek Him through His word, be enlightened ourselves and then show this light into the dark world around us.

When we are saved by the blood of Jesus shed on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins, we are all duty bound to serve Him with our entire beings and the service never ends.

I pray today that you would wake up to the reality that God is calling you and I to realize our true calling and to humble ourselves before Him to seek Him and serve Him.
