Jesus The High Priest But Not A Levite???

Exodus 29:1a,9b,15-16,35,38-39,44-46 “This is what you are to do to consecrate them, so they may serve me as priests... Then tie sashes on Aaron and his sons. The priesthood is theirs by a lasting ordinance. In this way you shall ordain Aaron and his sons... “Take one of the rams, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on its head. Slaughter it and take the blood and sprinkle it against the altar on all sides... Slaughter it, take some of its blood and put it on the lobes of the right ears of Aaron and his sons, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. Then sprinkle blood against the altar on all sides... “Do for Aaron and his sons everything I have commanded you, taking seven days to ordain them... “This is what you are to offer on the altar regularly each day: two lambs a year old. Offer one in the morning and the other at twilight... “So I will consecrate the Tent of Meeting and the altar and will consecrate Aaron and his sons to serve me as priests. Then I will dwell among the Israelites and be their God. They will know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of Egypt so that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God.

As I read today's chapter, I was left squirming about all the blood and gore stipulated by God as an offering to Him and kept wondering why, why? Animal rights have obviously had a lasting impact on me and therefore I see all this sacrifice in a different light from the people of Moses' age.

Having said that however, I do know that God does not simply ask for these sacrifices without perfect reason and therefore I hope you join me in asking God to speak through this chapter into our lives today.

God is the master planner and his perfect but indiscernible plans come to the fore here. We often look at life from our paradigm and try to define it and live in the confines of it thinking we have generally understood it.

However, do we truly understand the mind of God who created time, space, matter, emotions, and far, far more all at the same time and all working in perfect synchronicity to His lead?

This same God whom I worship with my heart and soul speaks to me personally as does He to everyone who calls on Him and therefore is omnipresent. He is able to control all the elements we see and all the elements we don't see or understand and therefore is omnipotent or all powerful.

He charted man's story with Adam and will finish it with Jesus and knows the beginning from the end making Him omniscient or the God who knows it all. He is the beginning of everything and therefore is Omni-parent or the beginning of all.

For a God who is so great, these sacrifices He asks for have perfect significance to Him and I therefore urge us to open our minds to Him to understand Him.

We note in this chapter as in the previous one that God clearly chose Aaron and his family to the priest's office with ceremony and solemnity. Moses held that mantle until this point when Aaron is consecrated with his family and that was by God's design and purpose alone.

This calling was a lasting ordinance or order from God and it meant that the true high priest would be of Levite descent. Jesus was not of the line of the Levites but was said to be of the line of Judah! How then could He become our great High Priest?

In Hebrews 7, Paul goes to great lengths to explain how Jesus became the permanent High Priest in the line of Melchizedek, who was the King of Salem and a priest of God and was offered a tenth of the royal massacre by Abraham, thereby recognizing him as a high priest.

Melchizedek was not of the line of Levi and yet was recognized as one and therefore so is Jesus who is from the line of Melchizedek. This was affirmed by God in Psalm 110:4 ,'The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”' and was confirmed by Paul in Hebrews 7:21, 'The old priesthood of Aaron perpetuated itself automatically, father to son, without explicit confirmation by God. But then God intervened and called this new, permanent priesthood into being with an added promise: God gave his word; he won't take it back: "You're the permanent priest." This makes Jesus the guarantee of a far better way between us and God—one that really works! A new covenant'.

Furthermore, Paul adds in Hebrews 7:26-28, 'So now we have a high priest who perfectly fits our needs: completely holy, uncompromised by sin, with authority extending as high as God's presence in heaven itself. Unlike the other high priests, he doesn't have to offer sacrifices for his own sins every day before he can get around to us and our sins. He's done it, once and for all: offered up himself as the sacrifice. The law appoints as high priests men who are never able to get the job done right. But this intervening command of God, which came later, appoints the Son, who is absolutely, eternally perfect'.

As we look into the old testament and learn from God, I pray that we are able to see how beautifully Jesus fulfills each and every aspect of the messiah and is worthy of our complete trust and faith.

If you have never been washed by His blood, I pray that you will call on Him right now and experience His cleansing. If you want to know more, feel free to write to me and I will be happy to clarify doubts you may have (servantboy @ gmail . com)
