Exodus 8:6,7,15,16,18,19,24,25,28,31,32 So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt... But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart and would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said. Then the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the ground,’ and throughout the land of Egypt the dust will become gnats.”... But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not. And the gnats were on men and animals. The magicians said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hard and he would not listen, just as the LORD had said... And the LORD did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh’s palace and into the houses of his officials, and throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies. Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land.”... Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the LORD your God in the desert, but you must not go very far. Now pray for me.”... and the LORD did what Moses asked: The flies left Pharaoh and his officials and his people; not a fly remained. But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go.
Three more plagues are used by God to speak to Pharaoh and the Egyptians but three more times they chose to ignore God's warnings.
It's odd that God says He is the one who hardens Pharaoh's hearts and He also is the one who sends Moses and Aaron to free the Israelites. Not the most efficient use of resources one would think.
Time and time again, we see that the magicians and sorcerers can match each of God's plagues with similar plagues of their own and this shows us the power of the evil one.
After the plague of the frogs, they are not able to perform with the gnats or flies and in fact they come up to Pharaoh to state that God's hand is in each of these plagues and therefore Pharaoh should comply with God's demands.
When I consider the actions of the magicians in Egypt, I am reminded of all the 'magic' of modern times that we live and accept as interesting in our times too.
Astrology, rei-ki, tantric healing, yoga, meditation, horoscopes, martial arts, etc. are forms of such 'magic' that have a powerful effect on us these days. While Christianity is a 'taboo' topic on campuses and in offices, all the others are acceptable modern-day 'arts' or exercises that are in our newspapers, neighborhoods, schools and even thrive in regions of the world where there is no religious freedom!
Mankind is willing to blindly accept that which is not from God and use it to talk into our lives but we are unwilling to let God any room in our lives.
Is this not the same as the incidents back in Egypt during Moses' time? Is there not such an amazing correlation between Pharaoh and us in our response to God versus the evil one? On February 10, 2011, Hosni Mubarak (ex-president of Egypt) refused to step down even after weeks of rioting by the people in his country. Does that not bear a resemblance to Pharaoh's response?
God certainly permits us to make choices as was clear then and even today and our choices define our destiny. Are you willing to defy God by choosing that which is not from Him and live with the consequence of it or are you willing to humble yourself before Jesus Christ and accept His yoke and be blessed by His hand?
In His Loving Service,
Malachi 3:5 I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and don't fear me," says Yahweh of Armies.
